The Explore Scientific Dobsonian Reflector Telescope is the classic beginner's Dobsonian telescope — a large-aperture Newtonian mirror on a simple, rock-steady rocker mount. There's no tripod to fuss with and no complicated setup: you just point it at what you want to see and nudge it to follow. That combination of big light-gathering optics and effortless aiming is why the Dobsonian remains the most-recommended first serious telescope in astronomy.

Available in 6-inch, 8-inch, and 10-inch apertures (plus a limited-edition Ruby Red 8-inch), each size gathers more light for brighter, more detailed views of the Moon, planets, and deep-sky objects like nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies.

Who it's for

Beginners and growing stargazers who want the most aperture — and the most to see — for their money, in a telescope that's genuinely easy to use. New to Dobsonians? See our guide to Dobsonian telescopes explained for beginners.

Key features

  • Large parabolic primary mirror (154mm / 208mm / 254mm) for bright, high-contrast views
  • Smooth Dobsonian rocker mount with a spring-tension system that holds balance as you add accessories
  • 2" Crayford focuser with 1.25" adapter — accepts a huge range of eyepieces and accessories
  • Beginner-ready out of the box — includes a 25mm Plössl eyepiece and red-dot finder
  • No tripod, no alignment — set it on the ground and observe in seconds

What you'll see

  • The Moon — craters, mountain ranges, and rilles in sharp, bright detail
  • Planets — Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud belts and moons, and Mars at opposition
  • Nebulae — the Orion Nebula and other bright emission clouds, brighter with more aperture
  • Star clusters — globular clusters like M13 resolving into pinpoint stars
  • Galaxies — Andromeda and brighter galaxies as glowing shapes under dark skies

Frequently asked questions

Why is a Dobsonian recommended for beginners?
A Dobsonian puts a big mirror on a simple, stable base, so you get lots of aperture (and lots to see) at a low price, with almost no setup. Point, look, and nudge to follow — there's no tripod balancing or star alignment to learn first.

Which size should I get — 6, 8, or 10 inch?
More aperture means brighter, more detailed views, but also more size and weight to move and store. The 6" is the lightest and most portable, the 8" is the classic all-rounder, and the 10" shows the most detail on faint deep-sky objects. Pick the largest you're comfortable carrying.

Do I need any special accessories to start?
No. Each telescope includes a 25mm eyepiece and a red-dot finder, so it's ready to use the first night. A second higher-power eyepiece is a nice early upgrade for planets.

Can I use it for astrophotography?
It's built for visual observing. You can capture the Moon and bright planets with a phone or planetary camera, but the Dobsonian mount doesn't track the sky, so it isn't suited to long-exposure deep-sky imaging.
