The DayStar Scout 80mm (Prominence model) is a dedicated H-alpha solar telescope tuned for bright, dramatic prominences. The solar etalon is built in, so you point, focus, and safely watch the Sun's edge erupt with glowing loops of gas — no separate filter or energy-rejection filter to add. The carbon-fiber tube keeps it light and thermally stable.

The Prominence tuning favors the solar limb, showing wider and brighter prominences arcing off the edge, with a little less surface contrast than the Chromosphere model.

Who it's for
Solar observers who love watching prominences and flares from a portable, dedicated 80mm H-alpha scope. New to telescopes? See our guide to picking your first telescope.

  • Prominence tuning: optimized for wider, brighter edge prominences and flares.
  • 80mm carbon-fiber achromat: 1400mm focal length (f/17.5) with a full 22mm clear aperture.
  • Dedicated H-alpha optics: the etalon is built in — no Quark or ERF required.
  • Lightweight & stable: carbon-fiber tube resists thermal expansion for steady focus.
  • Visual and imaging ready: precise front-end focus supports eyepieces and cameras.

What you'll see
The Prominence model puts on a show at the solar limb: tall, bright prominences looping and shifting hour to hour, plus surface filaments and active regions. It is a captivating, ever-changing view of the Sun's dynamic edge.

What's the difference between Prominence and Chromosphere models?
Prominence (this model) gives wider, brighter edge prominences with slightly less surface detail; the Chromosphere model favors surface contrast with narrower prominences.

Do I need to add a filter?
No. The etalon is built in, so it is a complete dedicated solar telescope with no separate Quark or ERF needed.

Is it safe for direct viewing?
Yes — it is purpose-built for safe H-alpha solar observation. Follow the included safety instructions.

Can I use it at night?
No. It is designed solely for H-alpha solar observing.
