The Explore Scientific FirstLight 80mm Refractor with the iEXOS-100 GoTo tracker is a beginner astrophotography starter bundle that pairs a genuine refractor telescope with a motorized GoTo mount, so you can find targets automatically and let the mount track them across the sky. A refractor uses a lens at the front to gather light, giving crisp, high-contrast views of the Moon and planets with very little maintenance.

Everything you need to start observing and taking your first astrophotos is in the box, and the mount's GoTo system does the hard work of locating objects for you.

Who it's for: Beginners who want to move beyond simple viewing and try tracking or imaging the night sky without buying a telescope and mount separately. If you're new to imaging, start here: Astrophotography for beginners.

  • 80mm refractor optics: An air-spaced achromatic doublet delivers sharp, high-contrast views of the Moon, planets, and brighter deep-sky objects.
  • iEXOS-100 GoTo mount: The PMC-Eight motor system uses stepper motors and a belt drive for smooth, accurate tracking with minimal backlash.
  • Wireless control: Steer the mount from a phone, tablet, or computer over the built-in wireless connection.
  • Complete starter kit: Includes a 1.25" 90° diagonal, 25mm Plössl eyepiece, red-dot finder, and a smartphone adapter.
  • Open-source PMC-Eight software: The control system is open-source, with an active community for tips and upgrades.

What you'll see: The 80mm aperture reveals lunar craters and rilles, Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud belts and moons, and brighter star clusters and nebulae. With the GoTo mount tracking, you can hold a target steady long enough for a smartphone or camera to capture it.

Is this a good telescope for astrophotography beginners?
Yes. The GoTo mount tracks objects automatically, which is essential for imaging, and the 80mm refractor is a forgiving, low-maintenance optic to learn on.

Do I need a computer to use the GoTo mount?
No. The PMC-Eight system connects wirelessly to a phone, tablet, or computer, so you can control it from a device you already own.

Can I use my own eyepieces and camera?
Yes. The 1.25" focuser and diagonal accept standard 1.25" eyepieces, and the smartphone adapter lets you start imaging right away.
