The Explore Scientific 100° Waterproof Eyepiece Series delivers one of the widest, most immersive views in amateur astronomy — a hyper-wide 100° apparent field of view that many observers describe as a "spacewalk," with stars filling your vision edge to edge. These premium wide-field telescope eyepieces are built for deep-sky sweeping, rich lunar detail, and expansive nebula and star-cluster views.

Fully multi-coated, edge-blackened optics deliver bright, high-contrast images, and the argon-purged, waterproof housings resist fogging, dust, and moisture — every eyepiece is sealed and pressure-tested for reliable performance in the field.

Who it's for

Intermediate and advanced stargazers with a 2" (or 3") focuser who want the most immersive, wide-field views available. If you're deciding between eyepiece series, see our guide on how to pick the proper telescope eyepiece.

Key features

  • 100° apparent field of view for an unmatched, edge-to-edge immersive view
  • Fully multi-coated, edge-blackened optics for bright, high-contrast images with minimal reflections
  • Argon-purged, waterproof housing — sealed against fogging, dust, and moisture
  • Long eye relief design for comfortable, extended observing
  • 2" barrel (5.5–20mm) and 3" barrel (25mm, 30mm) for the largest true fields of view

Choosing your focal length

Shorter focal lengths (5.5–9mm) give high magnification with a huge field — striking on planets, the Moon, and small deep-sky objects. Mid lengths (14–20mm) balance power and framing for general deep-sky work. Longer lengths (25–30mm) deliver the maximum wide-field experience for sweeping the Milky Way and large nebulae.

Specifications

Focal length Apparent field Barrel Best for
5.5 mm 100° 2" High-power planetary & lunar detail
9 mm 100° 2" Medium–high power deep-sky & planets
14 mm 100° 2" Balanced general observing
20 mm 100° 2" Wider deep-sky views with strong contrast
25 mm 100° 3" Low-power, bright wide-field scanning
30 mm 100° 3" Maximum field for sweeping the Milky Way

All models feature a 100° apparent field, fully multi-coated edge-blackened optics, and argon-purged waterproof housings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 2-inch focuser to use these?
Yes. The 5.5–20mm models use a 2" barrel, and the 25mm and 30mm use a 3" barrel, so your telescope needs a compatible focuser (a 3"-to-2" step is required for the largest two on most scopes).

What makes a 100° eyepiece special?
The ultra-wide 100° field puts far more sky in view at once, creating an immersive "floating in space" effect and letting you frame large objects and star fields that narrower eyepieces can't.

Are these good for beginners?
They're a premium option best suited to observers who already have a capable telescope and mount. Beginners often start with the 62° or 52° series and upgrade to 100° later.

Will they work with my telescope's focal length?
Yes — magnification is simply your telescope's focal length divided by the eyepiece focal length. The 100° field applies regardless of the telescope you use them on.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a beginner telescope you can see a surprising amount — the craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and star clusters like the Pleiades. As you get more comfortable, you can also spot nebulae and distant galaxies. Not sure which beginner telescope is right for you? Check out our Telescope Buying Guide.
