A 90mm aperture at f/5.5 is a seriously capable beginner scope — wide enough to pull in serious light, fast enough to give you broad, generous views of the night sky. The Explore Scientific FirstLight 90mm sits on a yoke-style alt-azimuth mount that makes setup and pointing intuitive from night one.

Unlike slower f/10 refractors that excel at high-magnification planetary views, the FirstLight 90mm's fast f/5.5 focal ratio gives you a wide, bright field of view — ideal for sweeping star fields, open clusters, nebulae, and the Milky Way. It still delivers sharp views of the Moon and brighter planets, but it shines as an all-around scope for new observers who want to explore the whole sky rather than stare at one target.

What you'll see

  • The Moon — craters, rilles, and mountain ranges in crisp detail
  • Planets — Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud bands and moons, Mars at opposition
  • Star clusters — the Pleiades, Beehive Cluster, and Hercules Globular in striking detail
  • Nebulae — the Orion Nebula, Lagoon Nebula, and other bright showpieces

Frequently asked questions

What makes f/5.5 different from slower refractors?
A lower f-number means a shorter focal length relative to the aperture, which gives you a wider, brighter field of view. This makes fast scopes like the FirstLight 90mm excellent for sweeping star fields and deep-sky objects. Slower f/10 scopes are better for high-power planetary work, but you'll see more sky at once with this one.

Is the yoke mount easy to use for beginners?
Yes — it's one of the friendliest mount styles for new observers. You point the scope by moving it in altitude (up/down) and azimuth (left/right) with no complex knobs or polar alignment required. Just loosen, aim, and tighten.

Can I upgrade the eyepiece?
Absolutely. The scope accepts standard 1.25" eyepieces, so any 1.25" eyepiece you buy will work. Adding a wider-field eyepiece or a Barlow lens will significantly expand what you can do with this scope.

Will I see color fringing with this achromatic refractor?
Some very slight color fringing on very bright objects like the Moon and Venus is normal with achromatic refractors. At f/5.5 it's more noticeable than at f/10, but most observers find it easy to look past for general observing. If color fringing is a concern, a higher-end ED or APO refractor would be the next step up.
