If watching plasma arcs and loops erupt from the edge of the Sun is what drew you to solar astronomy, the SS80P is built for exactly that view. It's a complete, dedicated hydrogen-alpha telescope in Prominence mode — tuned to the off-band wavelength where limb features stand out with maximum contrast against the dark sky background. No separate filter, no ERF, no extra components needed.

Prominence mode is optimized for the dramatic edge-of-disk action: the arcing loops, erupting filaments, and spicule forests at the solar limb that make H-alpha observing so compelling.

What you'll see:

  • Solar prominences — bright plasma arcs and loops rising from the solar limb
  • Erupting prominences — features that visibly move and change over minutes of watching
  • Limb spicules — the dense forest of fiery jets at the very edge of the Sun
  • Filament channels — dark arches visible when active regions rotate toward the limb

What's in the box:

  • SS80 OTA with integrated Quark Prominence — complete telescope, ready to use
  • Solar Bullet finder — safe solar finder for pointing without looking through the eyepiece
  • Vixen/photo mounting foot — attaches to most standard mounts
  • 90–240VAC wall adapter — works worldwide
  • Environmental hard case — rigid padded case for field transport

SS80C vs SS80P: Chromosphere (SS80C) shows fine surface texture and filaments across the full solar disk. Prominence (SS80P) gives brighter, higher-contrast limb features. Many experienced solar observers eventually own both — but if you're picking one, go for whichever view first made you want a solar telescope.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a beginner telescope you can see a surprising amount — the craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and star clusters like the Pleiades. As you get more comfortable, you can also spot nebulae and distant galaxies. Not sure which beginner telescope is right for you? Check out our Telescope Buying Guide.
