The National Geographic CF600 is a 50mm refractor in a carbon fiber-finish tube — and for a beginner telescope at $74.99, it delivers exactly what matters most: a clear, steady first look at the Moon's craters and Saturn's rings, without the fiddly setup that sends frustrated beginners back inside before the sky gets dark.

Unlike cheaper 50mm scopes with plastic focusers and wobbly tripods, the CF600 comes on a stable full-size tripod with a smooth alt-azimuth mount. The carbon fiber tube keeps the weight low and the look sharp. Two eyepieces, a red-dot finder, a star map, and bundled astronomy software mean you have everything for night one in the box — no hunting for accessories separately.

What you'll see

  • The Moon — craters, mountain ranges, and the dramatic terminator line in excellent detail
  • Saturn's rings — clearly visible at higher magnification on steady nights
  • Jupiter's Galilean moons — four pinpoints of light arranged around the planet
  • Open star clusters — the Pleiades, Beehive, and others in wide, bright fields

Frequently asked questions

How hard is it to set up?
Very easy. Attach the tube to the mount, extend the tripod legs, and insert an eyepiece. Most first-timers are looking at the Moon within five minutes of opening the box. The alt-azimuth mount moves in simple up/down and left/right directions — no polar alignment or motor drives to worry about.

Will it show Saturn's rings?
Yes — Saturn's rings are clearly visible at higher magnification (around 60×) when the planet is well-positioned in the sky. The views are rewarding and the rings will be recognizable even on your first night. Check an app like SkySafari to confirm Saturn's current position before going out.

Is this better than a department store telescope?
Yes, meaningfully so. National Geographic is a real optics brand with quality control, coated glass lenses, and a stable tripod. Department store scopes at this price often use plastic optics and mounts that vibrate with every touch. The CF600 delivers crisp views and stays steady.

What magnification does it reach?
With the included eyepieces you'll have at least two magnification options — typically around 30× for wide views and 60× for planets and the Moon. A 2× Barlow (available separately for around $15) doubles both for more flexibility.
