The Explore Scientific L-eXtreme 2-inch dual narrowband filter is a high-performance light pollution filter that delivers maximum nebula contrast for wide-field astrophotography. It isolates just two emission lines — H-alpha and OIII — at an ultra-narrow 7 nm bandpass, cutting through heavy light pollution and even moonlight to reveal faint nebulosity.

By passing only the wavelengths emission nebulae glow at and blocking almost everything else, this Optolong-made filter lets one-shot color cameras produce striking, high-contrast nebula images from bright skies.

Who it's for

Best for astrophotographers with DSLRs or one-shot-color cameras who image emission nebulae from light-polluted locations and want the strongest contrast possible. New to imaging? See our astronomy 101 stargazing basics guide.

Key features

  • Ultra-narrow 7 nm dual bandpass isolating H-alpha and OIII for maximum contrast.
  • Aggressive light-pollution and moonlight suppression for bright-sky imaging.
  • One-shot-color friendly with DSLRs, color CMOS, and mono CCD cameras.
  • Standard 2-inch threaded cell for 2-inch filter wheels and accessories.
  • Outstanding emission nebula detail on targets rich in hydrogen and oxygen.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference from the L-eNhance?
The L-eXtreme uses a narrower 7 nm dual bandpass (Ha and OIII only) for stronger light-pollution suppression, while the L-eNhance is wider and also passes H-beta. Choose L-eXtreme for the most aggressive contrast.

Can I use it with a DSLR?
Yes. It's made for one-shot-color cameras including DSLRs, color CMOS, and mono CCD cameras.

Is it good under moonlight?
Yes, its narrow bandpass helps suppress moonlight, making it useful even on brighter nights for emission-line targets.
