The DayStar Quantum SE is a tunable H-alpha solar filter that turns a suitable telescope into a detailed solar telescope. This Prominence-tuned version (0.7–0.9Å bandpass) is optimized for bright, dramatic prominences — the glowing loops of gas that arc off the Sun's edge. It threads into your telescope's optical path and shows the Sun in the deep-red hydrogen-alpha line where the chromosphere comes alive.

The Quantum housing includes an electronic LCD readout of the exact wavelength and wing-shift tuning buttons, so you can precisely shift on- and off-band for the best view or for Doppler studies.

Who it's for
Serious solar observers and imagers who want a high-performance, tunable H-alpha filter for their own refractor, SCT, or Maksutov. New to filters? See our guide to telescope filters.

  • Prominence tuning (0.7–0.9Å): optimized for bright, wide edge prominences and flares.
  • Electronic tuning: wing-shift buttons with a live LCD wavelength readout accurate to 0.1Å.
  • Wide scope compatibility: works with refractors, SCTs, and Maksutovs at the right focal ratio.
  • Requires ~f/30: best performance at f/27–f/35 — use a Powermate or stop-down mask if your scope is faster.
  • Complete kit: ships with front and rear plates, power supply, and a protective case.

What telescope do I need?
A refractor, SCT, or Maksutov operating around f/27–f/35. Faster scopes can reach that with a Powermate or a stop-down mask.

Do I need an energy-rejection filter (ERF)?
Depending on your aperture, a front ERF may be required for safe operation. Follow DayStar's aperture guidance for your scope.

Prominence vs Chromosphere tuning?
This Prominence version (0.7–0.9Å) favors bright edge prominences; the Chromosphere version (0.3–0.5Å) favors surface contrast and detail.

Can I use it for imaging?
Yes — it works for both visual observing and H-alpha solar imaging.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a beginner telescope you can see a surprising amount — the craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and star clusters like the Pleiades. As you get more comfortable, you can also spot nebulae and distant galaxies. Not sure which beginner telescope is right for you? Check out our Telescope Buying Guide.
