If you want to see the Sun's chromospheric surface in hydrogen-alpha light — the filaments, plage, active regions, and fine texture that white-light filters can't show — the SS80C is a complete, dedicated solar telescope that needs nothing else to get started. No separate Quark, no ERF, no adapter chain to assemble. Everything is integrated.

The Chromosphere mode tunes the etalon to the center of the H-alpha line where surface detail is brightest and most contrasted. You'll spend your time at the eyepiece, not in your parts drawer.

What you'll see:

  • Chromospheric surface texture — the intricate cellular network covering the Sun's face
  • Solar filaments — dark ribbons of cooler plasma crossing the disk
  • Plage — bright glowing regions surrounding active sunspot groups
  • Active region fine structure — magnetic detail that evolves visibly over hours
  • Solar flares — bright events across the surface when the Sun is active

What's in the box:

  • SS80 OTA with integrated Quark Chromosphere — complete telescope, ready to use
  • Solar Bullet finder — safe solar finder for pointing without looking through the eyepiece
  • Vixen/photo mounting foot — attaches to most standard mounts
  • 90–240VAC wall adapter — works worldwide
  • Environmental hard case — rigid padded case for field transport

Beginner note: The Quark in the SS80C can be removed and used on other compatible telescopes (f/4–f/8), making this more flexible than the SS60DS. Want to watch prominences at the solar limb instead of surface detail? See the SS80P.

Specs:

Aperture 80mm — more resolution than the SS60DS for sharper surface detail
Effective Focal Length 1,400mm
Etalon Clear Aperture 22mm — wider than the SS60DS for more even illumination across the disk
Observing Mode Chromosphere — optimized for surface detail, filaments, plage, and active regions
Focuser Helical front-end — eyepiece stays stationary during focus
Quark Removable — can be used on other compatible telescopes (f/4–f/8)
Tuning Range ±0.5Å with 0.1Å detents
Power 90–240VAC adapter included
ERF Required No — fully solar-safe as delivered
Warranty 5 years

Frequently Asked Questions

With a beginner telescope you can see a surprising amount — the craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and star clusters like the Pleiades. As you get more comfortable, you can also spot nebulae and distant galaxies. Not sure which beginner telescope is right for you? Check out our Telescope Buying Guide.
