The Explore Scientific 102mm f/7 FCD100 carbon-fiber APO triplet refractor telescope is a premium optical tube for critical visual observing and astrophotography. An apochromatic (APO) triplet uses three lens elements — including Hoya FCD100 extra-low-dispersion glass — to bring all colors of light to a single focus, producing razor-sharp, high-contrast images with virtually no false color. The carbon-fiber tube keeps weight low and rigidity high for demanding imaging work.

With a 102mm aperture and 714mm focal length (f/7), this refractor pairs excellent color correction with a fast, wide-field focal ratio, feeding light to a robust 2.5-inch HEX focuser that handles heavy cameras with ease.

Who it's for

Built for serious visual observers and astrophotographers who want a portable, premium APO refractor with lightweight carbon-fiber construction. New to the hobby? See our guide on how to pick your first telescope.

Key features

  • 102mm FCD100 air-spaced triplet APO with Hoya ED glass for false-color-free sharpness.
  • Fast 714mm f/7 optics for wide-field views and shorter exposures.
  • Carbon-fiber tube that's light yet rigid (about 9.5 lb) for portability.
  • 2.5-inch HEX focuser for precise, load-bearing focus with cameras.
  • Premium optical and mechanical quality for visual and imaging use.

What you'll see

The 102mm APO delivers sharp, high-contrast views — crisp lunar detail, Saturn's rings, Jupiter's belts and moons, tight double stars, and bright deep-sky objects with pinpoint stars and true color. Its fast f/7 focal ratio and flat, color-corrected field make it an excellent wide-field astrophotography refractor on a tracking mount.

Frequently asked questions

What makes an FCD100 APO special?
Its three-element design with Hoya FCD100 ED glass eliminates false color, delivering sharp, high-contrast, color-accurate images prized for visual use and astrophotography.

Is this an optical tube only?
Yes, it's an OTA. You'll need a suitable mount (and, for imaging, a field flattener and camera).

Why carbon fiber?
The carbon-fiber tube is lighter and more thermally stable than metal, aiding portability and holding focus as temperatures change.
