The Explore Scientific 127mm FCD100 Carbon-Fiber APO takes the already-impressive ED triplet formula and upgrades two critical components: the glass and the tube. HOYA FCD100 is fluorite-grade extra-low dispersion glass — one of the highest-performing optical materials available for refractors — and the carbon-fiber tube resists thermal expansion far better than aluminium, so your focus point stays stable as temperatures drop through the night.

For astrophotographers who've spent a long imaging session chasing focus drift, that carbon-fiber stability is a revelation. Pair it with the 3" HEX rack-and-pinion focuser — which can carry large sensors, filter wheels, and heavy flatteners without any flex — and you have a reference-class mid-aperture refractor that's still light enough to travel to a dark site.

What you'll see:

  • Galaxies — rich spiral arm detail and dust lanes under dark skies; outstanding in long-exposure imaging
  • Emission nebulae — true colour rendition with zero false-colour contamination across the field
  • Planetary nebulae — structure and colour visible even at moderate magnification
  • Star clusters — pinpoint stars right to the edges of the field, no coma or false colour
  • Planets — pristine colour accuracy and sharp limb definition on Jupiter and Saturn

What's in the box:

  • 127mm FCD100 carbon-fiber APO optical tube — HOYA fluorite-grade glass in a thermally stable tube
  • 3" HEX rack-and-pinion focuser — large-format focuser for cameras, filter wheels, and heavy accessories
  • CNC-machined tube rings — precision-engineered cradle for the OTA
  • Vixen-style dovetail — mounts to any compatible saddle plate

Beginner note: FCD100 (HOYA's designation) is a fluorite-crown glass with extra-low dispersion properties — it brings red, green, and blue light to nearly identical focal points, producing the colour-neutral stars and high-contrast images that serious imagers demand. The difference over standard ED glass is most visible in long-exposure astrophotography where star colour accuracy matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a beginner telescope you can see a surprising amount — the craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and star clusters like the Pleiades. As you get more comfortable, you can also spot nebulae and distant galaxies. Not sure which beginner telescope is right for you? Check out our Telescope Buying Guide.
