This Explore Scientific Dobsonian shroud is a light-blocking cover made for 16" truss-tube Dobsonian telescopes. A truss-tube design leaves the light path open between the mirrors, and a shroud wraps around that open section to keep stray light, dust and dew off your optics — so the images you see are darker-skied, higher-contrast and more detailed.

Made from stretchy, breathable black nylon with elastic bands at each end, it slips on quickly and stays put, without trapping heat or restricting airflow around the tube.

Who it's for: Owners of a 16" truss-tube Dobsonian — especially suburban observers battling stray light — who want better contrast. New to the hobby? See our astronomy 101 stargazing basics guide.

  • Blocks stray light: darkens the path between the mirrors to boost image contrast and brightness.
  • Keeps optics clean: shields the light path from dust and helps reduce dew.
  • Stretch black nylon: opaque, breathable fabric that lets air circulate while staying light-tight.
  • Elastic ends: bands at each end give a snug, easy fit that stays in place.
  • Made for 16" truss Dobs: sized specifically for Explore Scientific 16" truss-tube Dobsonians.

Why do I need a shroud?
On an open truss-tube Dobsonian, stray light from streetlights and the sky washes out contrast. A shroud darkens the light path so faint detail stands out.

Will it fit my telescope?
It's sized specifically for 16" truss-tube Dobsonians. Confirm your telescope is that size and design before ordering.

Does it help with dew?
Yes. By enclosing the light path it helps shield the optics from dust and reduce dew, while the breathable fabric still lets air circulate.

Is it easy to put on?
Very. The stretchy fabric and elastic ends let you slip it over the truss poles in seconds, and it stays securely in place.
