The Explore Scientific H-Alpha 12nm Narrowband Filter (2") isolates the red light of hydrogen-alpha (H-Alpha, 656nm) — the wavelength most emission nebulae glow brightest in — for high-contrast narrowband astrophotography on 2" filter systems and larger sensors. It passes only the H-Alpha line and blocks everything else, including light pollution and moonlight, for striking nebula detail against a dark sky.

Who it's for

Astrophotographers using monochrome cameras with 2" filter wheels or drawers who want the most useful narrowband filter for emission nebulae, without vignetting on larger sensors. New to filters? See our guide to the best telescope filters for beginners.

Key features

  • Isolates the H-Alpha line (656nm) — the brightest emission line for most nebulae
  • 12nm bandwidth — versatile across a wide range of focal ratios
  • Excellent light-pollution and moonlight rejection — image even near full Moon
  • 2" format for full-frame sensors and large imaging trains
  • Part of the S-II / H-Alpha / O-III (SHO) set

Frequently asked questions

Why start with H-Alpha?
Most emission nebulae shine brightest in H-Alpha, so it gives the most dramatic results and is the ideal first narrowband filter — even usable on its own for detailed monochrome nebula images.

Why the 2" size?
2" filters avoid vignetting with larger (full-frame) sensors and bigger imaging trains. Choose 1.25" for smaller cameras and filter wheels.

Can I image under a bright Moon?
Yes — the narrow passband rejects most skyglow and moonlight, so H-Alpha imaging works even on bright nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

With a beginner telescope you can see a surprising amount — the craters and mountains on the Moon, the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, and star clusters like the Pleiades. As you get more comfortable, you can also spot nebulae and distant galaxies. Not sure which beginner telescope is right for you? Check out our Telescope Buying Guide.
