The Explore Scientific H-Alpha 7nm Narrowband Filter (2") isolates the red light of hydrogen-alpha (H-Alpha, 656nm) with a tight 7nm passband, for maximum-contrast narrowband astrophotography on 2" filter systems. The narrower bandwidth blocks even more light pollution and skyglow than a 12nm filter, revealing faint nebula detail against a very dark background — ideal for imaging from suburban skies.

Who it's for

Astrophotographers using monochrome cameras with 2" filter wheels or drawers who want the highest H-Alpha contrast, especially under light pollution. New to filters? See our guide to the best telescope filters for beginners.

Key features

  • Isolates the H-Alpha line (656nm) with a tight 7nm passband
  • Maximum contrast and superb rejection of light pollution and moonlight
  • Reveals faint nebula structure for deep, detailed images
  • 2" format for full-frame sensors and large imaging trains
  • Part of the S-II / H-Alpha / O-III (SHO) set

Frequently asked questions

7nm or 12nm?
7nm gives higher contrast and better light-pollution rejection, best with slower focal ratios; 12nm is more forgiving with fast telescopes. Both isolate the same H-Alpha line.

What camera do I need?
It's designed for monochrome astronomy cameras. Pair with S-II and O-III for full-color SHO (Hubble-palette) images.

Can I image under a bright Moon?
Yes — the tight passband rejects most skyglow and moonlight, so H-Alpha imaging works even on bright nights.
