If you've just got your first telescope, a planisphere is one of the best things you can add to your kit. Rather than scrolling on your phone (which kills your night vision), you just align the dial to the current date and time — and it instantly shows every constellation visible in your sky right now.

The Explore Scientific Tirion Double‑Sided Planisphere (ES‑TPS018) works for any location in the US and covers latitudes from 0° to 60° North. Designed by master celestial cartographer Wil Tirion, it's accurate enough for experienced observers and simple enough for complete beginners. The double-sided design reduces the map distortion that plagues single-sided planispheres, giving you a truer picture of the sky. Pair it with a red flashlight and you've got everything you need to find your way around the night sky.

How to Use the Explore Scientific Tirion Planisphere

  1. Select Your Latitude — Determine your observing location's latitude (between 0° and 60° North) and use the appropriate side of the double-sided planisphere.
  2. Set the Date and Time — Align the current date on the outer ring with your local time on the inner ring. Account for Daylight Saving Time if applicable.
  3. Orient the Planisphere — Hold it so the north direction on the dial points toward true north to align with the actual night sky.
  4. Read the Star Map — Stars near the center of the window are directly overhead; stars near the edge are closer to the horizon.
  5. Identify Celestial Objects — Match constellations on the planisphere to the sky above, using symbols for major stars and deep-sky objects.

Tip: Use a red flashlight when reading the planisphere to preserve your night vision.
