The National Geographic 76mm Compact Reflector is the friendliest way to start with a Newtonian reflector — a design that delivers noticeably brighter views than a same-sized refractor, all in a tabletop footprint that needs no setup and no assembly.

Unlike entry-level refractors that require you to balance a scope on a wobbly tripod, this 76mm Dobsonian sits directly on any stable surface and is ready to observe in seconds. The 76mm mirror gathers significantly more light than a 50mm or 60mm lens, producing richer, more detailed views of the Moon, planets, and bright deep-sky objects. With magnification ranging from 18× to 117× via the included eyepieces and 2× Barlow lens, it covers everything from wide-field star sweeps to close-up lunar detail.

What you'll see

  • The Moon — individual craters, mountains, and valleys in striking detail
  • Jupiter — cloud bands and all four Galilean moons simultaneously
  • Saturn — rings clearly defined, Cassini Division visible in good conditions
  • Deep sky — the Orion Nebula, Beehive Cluster, and Andromeda Galaxy as a faint smudge

Frequently asked questions

What's a Dobsonian telescope?
A Dobsonian is a Newtonian reflector on a simple rocker-box mount. You move it by hand in altitude (up/down) and azimuth (left/right), with no motors or complicated alignment needed. It's widely considered the most beginner-friendly reflector design because you can just point and look.

Does it need a tripod?
No — this is a tabletop Dobsonian, meaning it sits on any stable flat surface like a table, bench, or car hood. No separate tripod is needed, which also makes it significantly more stable than tripod-mounted beginner scopes.

How does a 76mm reflector compare to a 70mm refractor?
The 76mm mirror collects a bit more light than a 70mm lens. More importantly, reflectors don't suffer from chromatic aberration (color fringing), so planetary and lunar views tend to appear crisper at higher magnifications. The tradeoff is that reflectors occasionally need collimation (mirror alignment), though this one rarely needs it with normal use.

Is this good for kids?
Yes — the tabletop Dobsonian design is especially forgiving for younger astronomers. It's fully assembled out of the box, there are no tripod legs to fumble with, and the motion is simple and intuitive. The included guidebook helps kids learn what they're looking at.
