The National Geographic CF700SM 70mm refractor telescope is a beginner astronomy telescope that pairs a light carbon-fiber-look tube with a long, high-contrast focal length. A refractor telescope uses a front lens to gather light and form sharp, bright images, and at 70mm with a 700mm focal length (f/10) this scope is especially well suited to crisp views of the Moon and planets.

The longer f/10 optics naturally give higher-contrast, higher-power views, making it a great backyard telescope for lunar and planetary observing.

Who it's for

Great for beginners and families who want a versatile refractor with a focus on sharp lunar and planetary views. New to the hobby? See our guide on how to pick your first telescope.

Key features

  • 70mm refractor optics for bright, sharp images.

What you'll see

The CF700SM excels on the Moon — crisp craters, ridges, and mountain ranges — and shows Saturn's rings, Jupiter's cloud belts and moons, and the phases of Venus. Its long focal ratio favors sharp, high-power views of these bright targets over wide deep-sky fields.
